UN MESSAGE ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN´ S DAY

3/8/2010

The first International Women´s Day was observed in 1909 and the United Nations have observed this day on the 8th March since 1975. In adopting its Resolution on the observance of International Women’s Day, the UN General Assembly cited two key reasons: to recognize the fact that securing peace and social progress and the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms require the active participation, equality and development of women; and to acknowledge the contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace and security. This year, at the occasion of the International Women´s Day United Nations world-wide is calling all to contribute to ensuring “Equal Rights, Equal Opportunities: Progress for All.”

The United Nations Secretary General highlights that there are many examples of progress in enhancing  gender equality, thanks in large part to the resolute efforts of civil society organizations. One key lesson is the importance of addressing broader discrimination and injustice. Still, gender stereotyping and discrimination remain common in all cultures and communities.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina women make up 51,4 % of the total population. In recent years there has been visible progress made in Bosnia and Herzegovina on achieving gender equality. However, Bosnia and Herzegovina still copes with deep-rooted gender inequality in society at large. Although there is political commitment to work towards gender equality, challenges still persist.

The United Nations Country Team Bosnia and Herzegovina has been jointly working on empowering women politically, economically and socially through numerous  activities  together with the government and civil society in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The aim of these actions is to ensure the fulfillment of the human rights of women by reducing poverty among women and in the society as a whole, reducing violence against women,  by improving women’s health, including reproductive health and by strengthening women economically.

The United Nations Country Team in Bosnia and Herzegovina will continue to support the Government structures and civil society in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including policy makers and institutions on all levels, in addressing gender inequalities that still persist.

On this International Women’s Day, the UN Country Team in Bosnia and Herzegovina is calling upon all government institutions, civil society and each individual to strive together
to improve the position of women even more in the years to come, and to ensure equal rights, equal opportunities for all, and therewith to contribute to enhancing progress for all in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“Only united together we can eliminate inequalities in the society and empower women in the society”, is the key message of the United Nations Country Team in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Develop a global partnership for development

BiH has been the recipient of considerable international financial assistance, both for humanitarian purposes and post-conflict reconstruction. Yet as we move to a new developmental phase, the scale of these resources will decline. It is now more important than ever then that BiH gets the best value for the funds put at its disposal.
