UNESCO - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization


The UNESCO country office in Bosnia and Herzegovina was established in October 1994, and was closed in September 2003 and replaced by a project office. The project office is functioning as the antenna office of the Sector for Culture of UNESCO Venice Office. During the nine years of its existence the country office carried out reconstruction, capacity building and reconciliation projects in the areas of its mandate - mainly education, cultural heritage, and medias.

The office is working very closely with the UNCT, specific UN agencies, not to mention the Council of Europe, OHR, OSCE and numerous international and national NGOs.

Areas of work

- Technical assistance to the Member State, in particular case Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the field of culture
- Promotion of the Cultural Heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Promotion of the Cultural Heritage of SEE Countries
- Technical assistance to the member states of South East Europe in regard to the promotion and preservation of the Cultural Heritage
- Implementation of the training programme for curriculum developers in Bosnia and Herzegovina under the direction of the UNESCO International Bureau for Education (Geneva)
