UNFPA - United Nations Population Fund

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programmes to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect.

UNFPA has been providing support to Bosnia & Herzegovina (BiH) since 1995. UNFPA has funded a number of projects in support of  development efforts in the area of reproductive health (RH), gender based violence (GBV) and population and development strategies (PDS) in BiH. Total project expenditure from 1995-2009 amounts to US $3.6 million.

UNFPA Country Programme Action Plan (CPAP)
UNFPA BiH, as a member of the BiH UN Country Team contributed to developing the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for the periods 2005 – 2009 & 2010-2014. The first five year CPAP (2005-2009) of UNFPA BiH is in its last year of implementation. Currently, UNFPA is in the process of finalizing the first fully fledged CPAP 2010-2014 contributing to UNDAF, and is aligned with the UNFPA Strategic Plan 2008-2011. Through the new CPAP 2010-2014 UNFPA will continue to focus on three strategic outcomes: sexual and reproductive health (SRH), gender equality (GE) and population and development strategies (PDS). SRH Programme Component will support ensuring equal access of adolescents/youth SRH services and preventive programmes for RH of women. PDS programme component will focus on the provision of support to the government for the population and housing census 2011, creation of social policies for elderly and on strengthening the data collection mechanisms for stronger evidence-based policy making.  Gender Equality Programme Component will focus on prevention and combating GBV, including through establishment of referral mechanisms in BiH.  UNFPA is particularly focusing on the goals and objectives of the Programme of Action (PoA) of International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) review (ICPD+15), while clearly following the principles of human rights.

Partnerships
The partners identified to work with UNFPA in the implementation of the CPAPs (2005-2009 & 2010-2014) are both governmental and non-governmental stakeholders (including community service organizations, women’s and youth organizations, international NGOs, the media, academic and research institutions, and private sector).
