5th June – World Environment Day
Over the last forty years, the World Environment Day Ceremony has become a global event dedicated to stimulate the awareness of the growing environmental issues across the world. It encourages us to take responsibility in saving the planet and get actively involved in sustainable development.
The 2012 theme for World Environment Day is Green Economy. A green economy is described as one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. In its simplest expression, a green economy is one which is low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive.
By 2050, world population will rise to 9 billion, and nowadays we already use 1.3 to 1.4 more resources than available. The development of a green economy is therefore a common concern of all of us, if we want to reach sustainable development and environmental-friendly industry in the decades to come.
World Environment Day was celebrated in Sarajevo too. An award ceremony was held on the occasion of the competition "My Local Community and Green Energy for the Future."
"36 high schools from the whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina took part in this competition. Students were given an opportunity to express their creativity in the way that suits them best, all in order to present their vision of sustainable future in their local communities using renewable energy sources" - said Amila Selmanagić Bajrovic, Biomass Project Manager.
The school contest was carried out as part of the „BiH Biomass Energy for Employment and Energy Security – Biomass project“, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNDP).
