UNDP - United Nations Development Programme
UNDP is the United Nations' global development network. It is an Organisation advocating for change and connecting countries to the knowledge, experience and resources they need to help people build a better life. UNDP is operational in 177 countries, working with them to develop their own solutions to global and national development challenges. As these countries develop local capacity, they draw on the experience and expertise of the UNDP staff and the Organisation’s wide range of partners.
In 2000, 189 nations made a promise to free people from extreme poverty and multiple deprivations. This pledge became the Millennium Development Goals to be achieved by 2015. UNDP's network links and co-ordinates global and national efforts to reach these Goals, focusing on democratic governance, poverty reduction, crisis prevention and recovery, environment and energy and HIV/AIDs.
All UNDP’s activities encourage the protection of human rights, capacity development and the empowerment of women. The Organisation also helps developing countries attract and use aid effectively. UNDP’s policy advice, technical and financial support and advocacy toward strengthening human development are aimed at one end result: real improvements in people’s lives.
UNDP presence in Bosnia and Herzegovina
UNDP has been operational in Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1996. Its programme activities are guided by the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF), which is endorsed by the BiH Council of Ministers and United Nations Country Team (UNCT).
The UNDP Country Programme priorities for 2010-2014 are designed to assist Bosnia and Herzegovina to become a member of the European Union. They include strengthening democratic governance and reducing social exclusion; promoting regional and local development and poverty reduction; enhancing human security and rule of law; and promoting biodiversity conservation and energy efficiency initiatives.
